HeaLaB is a European Research Network formed in 2018. University professors, research groups and scholars holding degrees in Law, Ethics or Medicine from seven European countries (Greece, Spain, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, UK, France) participated in the first network meeting that took place in Thessaloniki, Greece in February 2018.
The network aims to study, analyze and propose solutions in medicolegal and/or bioethical problems arising in the EU, as its population ages, technology progresses, the economic crisis persists and the member states change, while refugee migration intensifies, and new healthcare or social needs emerge. This is being achieved by the conduct of research on topics with high impact to everyday life in the EU, by publishing scientific articles, reports and opinions on those topics and by organizing meetings and/or conferences. Moreover, the members of the Network are contemplating organizing a joint multinational M.Sc. and PhD course in Medical Law & Bioethics.
Since its formation, the members of the Network have met 3 times in different locations (the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Rome and the University of Mannheim, with the founding members rotating in hosting the meeting). As a result, a COST application has been filed, seeking a grant to facilitate mobility. The Network seeks to expand by admitting new members from European countries with similar expertise and interests.
